Customer review published at Heavenly Tiramisu

TUCSON, 10 The Black Rose Caffé, 1800 N. Stone, Tucson, 85705. (Years ago, I had my very first taste of heavenly Tiramisu in a tiny Italian restaurant in Palmdale, CA. I was the restaurant reviewer for a business-lifestyle magazine at the time. I praised the Tiramisu highly. For years afterward, I tried ordering Tiramisu in other restaurants but finally gave up because I could never duplicate that first experience. Most Tiramisu I tried was soggy. Ick! Recently, my friends Mariah and Demetrius opened the Black Rose Caffé in Tucson. Getting back to her Italian roots, Mariah was experimenting with various pastries and desserts and one night offered me a taste of her most recent creation: her very own incarnation of Tiramisu. It was to-die-for! Not only was the flavor superior to others I had tried, but the consistency was perfect! It was dreamy, creamy, angel soft but no sog! To call it heavenly would be too trite – miraculous is a better descriptor – you simply have to experience it. And to do that, the Black Rose has created TiramiSundays where Mariah’s incarnation of the coveted dessert manifests itself, making magick on your tongue.) – Julian Greene, 7/06/02.

Michael Yugo

Michael Yugo
Michael Yugo is the first person to ever perform live music at the Black Rose Caffe. He helped us to get our music program starting by introducing us to local artists and promoting our caffe to other musicians while we were on the road.

A Truly Magical Place

They have great coffee and espresso, lots of goodies in the bakery case and sandwichs with unusual names like “wicked ‘wich” and “its a wrap”. The place is beautifully decorated with a magical theme. It is very comfy. The owners pride themselves with good service and the food is great. There are all kinds of things to do there: they have an extensive library with books from many different and unusual interests, they have chess boards, open mic nite, entertainment, and an art gallery. The owners promote local talent by giving artists, poets, writers, and musicians a place to display their art and play their music. I love the place.

Tucson needs more places like the Black Rose Caffe

What a delightful surprise to find this little treasure of a place right here in Tucson. It has to be the coolest coffee shop in Tucson from an interior design perspective. In fact take the cool and friendly atmosphere of some of Tucson’s grungy coffee shops, make then clean and more modern and you are now getting close to the Black Rose experience (but not really!).

If you enjoy live music in a quiet and more intimate setting then this is the place for you. Stop by on a wednesday for open mic nite, or just check their calendar for events. You could just give them a call as they would be delighted to discuss the up coming events with you. I was there on a Friday night when singer song writer Michael Yugo was accompanied by other local musicians. Excellent music, in a fabulous setting. I never realized that Tucson has a music scene this good!

They have good food (I sampled the Hummus Plate), which is all reasonably priced. Of course there are the usual coffee beverages, and some with interesting names such as the Black Magick Mocha. A fine selection of loose tea is also available, for tea lovers like myself.

I have to mention that the couple who own the place are two of the friendliest people that I have met since moving to Tucson 6 years ago. They really deserve to do well. Pay them a visit you will be glad you did, and who knows you might just find yourself liking it so much that you become a regular.

On a final note they maintain a nice display of artwork from local artists. If you would like to see your art on the walls then give them a call for more information.

All the best,
Justin.

Gazpacho

Gazpacho soup, also known as gazpacho, is a cold, Spanish liquid salad that is popular in warmer areas and during the summer. Gazpacho descends from an ancient Andalusian concoction based on a combination of stale bread, garlic, olive oil, salt, and vinegar – a cold bread soup. With the Columbian Exchange beginning in 1492, the tomato and the bell pepper were brought to Europe.

At the Black Rose Caffe we make our gazpacho from fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, red bell peppers, onion, garlic, olive oil, vinegar and seasonings. It is cold and refreshing with a slightly tart taste. It is the perfect dish for a vegetarian or vegan diet as it contains no meat, cheese or dairy products.
We invite you to come to the Black Rose Caffe and taste a little of this fabulous dish. We think you’ll agree that this is the perfect dish for a hot summer day.

Italian Soda

The Italian Soda was invented over 80 years ago in San Francisco when Rinaldo and Ezilda Torre began blending syrup recipes from their homeland in the back of their North Beach grocery store. Mixing their rich flavorful syrups with sparkling water and ice, they introduced the classic Italian soda to local café owners. Another version of this drink is the Italian Cream Soda.

At the Black Rose Caffe we offer a large variety of Italian sodas designed to suit any mood or taste. You can choose from any of the many Italian Soda creations on our menu or you can be artistic and create your own drink from some of the many syrups we carry.

Cappuccino

Cappuccino is the most misunderstood drink that we serve at the Black Rose Caffe. Some of our customers do not understand the difference between a cappuccino and a latte – probably because they have had one from a bad coffee shop!

Basically it is an Italian beverage, prepared with espresso and milk. A cappuccino is generally defined as 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk and 1/3 frothed milk. We make it in two styles: a “dry cappuccino” – for the purist – made in the traditional way with two shots of espresso and 2 ounces of steamed milk, and a “wet cappuccino” – for the uninitiated – with four ounces of steamed milk instead of two. Both drinks are covered with a large dollop of foamed milk to finish it off. We think it’s best when served in a ceramic cup and consumed slowly while savoring the delicious brew. However we’ll serve it to go in a paper cup if you insist. We also serve an iced cappuccino for those who want it. We make it the same way except that we place ice in the cup first, add the espresso and steamed milk, stir slightly and ad the foam. It looks great and taste good!

The origin of the name is in the brown hooded silken golden embroidered robes worn by the Capuchin order of Franciscan friars. There is good article about cappuccino in Wikipedia.
